With our in house fabrication shop we can fabricate bluestone, limestone, granite, and brownstone to fit your custom project. Some of the many fabrication possibilities include: pillar caps, radius steps for front entry ways, caps for stone walls, fireplace mantle and hearth stones, and counter tops for outdoor barbecues.

Certain orders may need to be sent out to the quarry for fabrication. Please contact TLC Supply to discuss fabrication orders and lead times.

Common Finishes & Terminology

Rock Face – A Rock Faced edge finish is produced by striking the stone surface with a chisel leaving a rough natural edge finish.

Thermal – The thermal finish is produced by applying a high-temperature torch to the surface of the stone leaving a rough-textured finish.

Thermal Edge

Pencil – A penciled edge resembles the end of a pencil eraser with a slight radius.

Chamfered – A chamfered edge is 45 ° cut into the edge of the stone. The deeper the cut, the wider the bevel face is.

Ease – This edge treatment is very common and offers a clean and simple look. Easing an edge offers a square flat face with the sharp edge on top rounded slightly. Sometimes, the eased edge is rounded enough to be called a quarter round edge.

Full or Half Bull-nose – The full bull-nose offers perhaps the most contemporary look. A side view of full bull-nose shows the shape of a half circle. The full bull-nose is gentle on the body and has no edges to chip. The half bull-nose edge can also be called the round-over because instead of being squared off, it is rounded over.

Rockface Finish

Rockfacing is a hand-crafted process achieved by a skilled craftsman who chisels the top and bottom of a stone face or edge with the intention of creating a textured, 3D look. The end result enhances the natural beauty of the stone by highlighting its intricacies and giving it a rough appearance.

Thermal Finish

The Thermal finish is produced by applying a high-temperature flame to the surface of the stone. This flame fractures crystals on the face, leaving a rough-textured finish. Highly skid-resistant, this finish is an excellent choice for walking surfaces.

Natural Cleft

Natural cleft stone finish occurs naturally when the layers of stone are quarried, mainly in materials like slate and limestone. It has a spalling appearance.

Sandblasted Finish

A sandblasted stone has a rough finish which is achieved when a stone is subjected to a high pressure blast of water and siliceous sand through an air gun.

Bush Hammered Finish

The rough, textured face created by the bush hammer gives the tumbled look while maintaining a flat and even surface.

Honed vs. Polished Finish

Honed has a smooth, flat, matte finish whereas polished is smooth and shined to reflect light. Polished and Honed are NOT slip resistant.

Sawn Finish

Sawn refers to cutting the stone and no "decorative" finish is made to it. On a sawn finish you will still be able to see saw marks and striations made from the diamond blade. This surface is smooth and NOT slip resistant.

Below you will find stone fabrication materials and techniques, as well as guidelines for submitting a quote.

Please include all necessary information on request (i.e. material: width, length and thickness, finish and edge treatment). In order to accurately quote this project; please list material, piece count, width x length x thickness (all in inches), top finish and edge finish.

For example: 3 pieces Granite, 42”x95”x2” thermal top, rocked 1 long and rocked 2 short ends.

Bluestone 1 piece, 13”x73”x2” thermal top, saw cut 1 long, thermal 1 long and thermal 2 short ends.

Plywood, luan, cardboard, or durable plastic templates require job name, material, thickness, edge treatments and finishes as well as your company name, contact name, and contact information. All templates will be cut to the finished size of the template.
